Ok, I m going to keep this simple because I don t think this book real deserves any sort of review whether it s good or bad yup it was that bad But i feel as a consumer who was hoping for a new different kick ass fantasy book, with awesome suspense and action, i was thoroughly taken for a ride The girl only just met the guy for 30 SECONDS and she spent frickin weeks moping over him How is that a good role model for teen girls of today hey girls, go into the woods at night and wait for a tall dark stranger to come and find you then mope and drool over him for weeks even if he showed no interest in you what so ever and is possibly dangerous I mean i know it s ment to be love at first sight and is all good and awesome and I love romance as much as the next person but come on show some felt self respect or dignity woman YOU MET HIM FOR 30 SECONDS I never felt like i could empathize with the main character because she had no depth at all to her character and she completely ditched all friends and family for a fit guy and last I thought her problems where just over dramatic and boring and there was no originality to the story what so ever and breaths So in a nut shell, sorry to people who did like it but, i didn t.

Terrible It s trailing on the end of the vampire trend and introduces nothing new The story is stale and uninteresting, superficial and slow Basically, the author took the characters from Twilight plain chick vampirey stalker guy who saves her life and stuck them in a generic vampire hunter romance All of this is not helped by the mediocre writing, where the author uses childish dialogue such as You re mine now and I m gonna do whatever I want with you, and he can t do anything about it he cackled Oh, and dear author it s okay to use a few naughty words sometimes These aren t little kids Generally speaking, a sixteen year old in a life or death situation is going to use something a little stronger than darn Now, on to details as to why this sucked so much For one thing, the characters are seriously lacking in depth and originality Julia Parker might as well be Bella Swan for all anyone cares neither of them have any personality, both of them are stalked by their boyfriends who save their lives multiple times, neither are strong heroines, both are described as perfectly normal and yet they manage to have boys drooling all over them Shut up Plus, after she meets this totally cool guy who saves her life, Julia goes and blabs to everyone in high school, and becomes instantly popular Everyone wants to talk to her No, Brenda Pandos That s not how it works If people want to hear a story which in this case, no one would care in real life they tend to go to the gossip mill instead Maybe the author was just sadly in the out crowd as a youth and is expressing her deep seated desire to be popular with a bunch of high school kids Not to mention, Julia is disgustingly wimpy She s afraid of everything, including empty woods at night Empty woods near her house And her sprained ankle Oh baby, she milks that minor injury like a squirt happy heifer.Speaking of Julia s fear in the woods, the forest is supposed to evoke some sort of suspenseful, frightening response even before the character feels any real heebie jeebies So while Pandos is busy writing about how terrifying the woods are, the reader is sitting there thinking, why is this supposed to be scary is the main character ten This pattern continues throughout the book, like when Julia fights with her friends and family No real drama, no reason for anyone to be worked up and yet we re supposed to feel like we re watching a goddamn tragedy. Now for the romance, which is supposed to be the driving force of the novel I love romance in my books, as long as it s done well This wasn t It was a typical Twilight esque romance Girl is in danger, boy saves girl, boy is gorgeous, girl has no redeeming qualities, boy stalks girl, boy and girl fall in love within half an hour There, you don t even need to read the book. But, really Come on If you meet a guy for maybe half an hour, you re not in love Stop bitching about how much you miss him and how your heart feels ripped to shreds and how your whole life is torn like your heart actual quotes, corniness and all You don t need multiple mother effing heart to hearts with ten different people before you move on and say goodbye Good lord Nor should you continue to cling to someone who is downright RUDE to you Girls, let that be a lesson to you if Mr Cutie is an asshole to you, dump him in the dirt and move on to someone else right then and there Don t waste time moping about Mr Cute who you don t even know not being Mr Right That is flat out a waste of time. Now finally, one thing Julia can apparently sense how people are feeling, like a watered down Sookie Stackhouse from Dead to the World and so on This adds absolutely nothing to the story, and in fact just detracts from it Why Because the author half assedly decided to throw in a random character trait to I don t know, make it paranormal Because vampires just weren t supernatural enough Oh, there s a random werecat dispensing sage advice think Solembum from Eragon, because Pandos wanted to make the book even generic. Now, let s stack this against The Fantasy Novelist s Exam by Rinkworks to see how bad this really is For those of you who don t know, The Fantasy Novelist s Exam is described as a guide to prevent awful novels from being written From its page Ever since J.R.R Tolkien and C.S Lewis created the worlds of Middle Earth and Narnia, it seems like every windbag off the street thinks he can write great, original fantasy, too The problem is that most of this great, original fantasy is actually poor, derivative fantasy Frankly, we re sick of it, so we ve compiled a list of rip off tip offs in the form of an exam We think anybody considering writing a fantasy novel should be required to take this exam first Answering yes to any one question results in failure and means that the prospective novel should be abandoned at once.7 Does your story revolve around an ancient prophecy about The One who will save the world and everybody and all the forces of good Yes8 Does your novel contain a character whose sole purpose is to show up at random plot points and dispense information Yes14 How about a wise, mystical sage who refuses to give away plot details for his own personal, mysterious reasons Yes16 Do any of your female characters exist solely to be captured and rescued Yes.21 How about a half elf torn between his human and elven heritage Yes, if you replace elf with vampire Sad Just sad I wish it was easier to return kindle content, because I want my 99 cents back.

Likeable Heroine Battles Vampires I ve chatted with friendly author Brenda Pandos online and I ve wanted to read her Talisman series for quite some time When I won The Sapphire Talisman on a Goodreads giveaway, it was my cue to bump up the series on my to be read list The Emerald Talisman is the first book, featuring Julia, a sixteen year old blonde living in northern California Her life is rather normal except for the unexplained death of her mother when Julia was young Julia reportedly witnessed the event but doesn t remember what happened. Her normal life shifts into the paranormal when a strong young man rescues her from peril Nicholas seems so calming and warm that Julia falls into despair when he doesn t return her calls At one point Nicholas is downright cold to her and at others he simply avoids her, though she can still feel his longing for her Talk about mixed signals Luckily Julia meets a kind boy named Phil, who just moved into town It seems like their friendship might help her deal with the loss of Nicholas in her life However, Phil gets attacked, which sets into motion a threatening vampire triangle with Nicholas, Phil, and Julia will Julia survive I really like Julia Her special ability to read others emotions has likely advanced her thoughtfulness and wisdom beyond her years I wonder if losing her mother at a young age is what made her sensitivity to others blossom When Julia faces dangerous situations, she comes across as being brave without appearing idiotic I also enjoyed her relationships with her brother and father It s nice to see a brother who might lightly tease her but isn t such an antagonist like in many other stories And her father seems to be striving to be a good parent despite his grief and absence due to work travel.I think the writing improves as the story progresses There are too many high school friends to keep track of in the beginning, and it takes a while to get into the story I m glad we find out what happened with Julia s mother, and I m curious to meet Nicholas father I give The Emerald Talisman 3.5 stars I m really looking forward to The Sapphire Talisman, where I hope we learn about Nicholas and about the talisman.

The Emerald Talisman had been on my to read list for a couple of years now It s a long list of hundreds of books I want to read but never find the time Thankfully Brenda recently released the book as an audio and I was able to sign up for the blog tour.I m a huge audio book fan I listen to them often and usually the audio books I listen to are ones that have been on my to read list for too long and end up being books I really enjoy The Emerald Talisman was no exception I m grateful I finally got around to this one.First off this book is clean Most of the paranormal young adult novel I ve read recently are far from clean but this one didn t have anything really objectionable in it and I could listen to it with my kids around without worrying about it The main character came across as very naive and childlike to me I am not sure if my view of her would have been different if I read the book or if I got this impression due to the narrator.I didn t read the book summary before starting this one so I really didn t know what to expect Julia s instant obsession with Nicholas was a little much for me and I found myself rolling my eyes at her thought process but it also reminded me of what it was like to be young, in love and unsure of yourself I liked how the story and mystery unfolded slowly throughout the book I am not a fan of book summaries so I usually don t read them because they give too much away Not having read the book summary I honestly didn t know what Nicholas was until I was a good way into the book I think it was much better to read it not knowing and wondering.Hopefully the rest of the series will make an appearance on audio soon.

First of all, while I may catch some harsh feedback from this first comment, I have to say that The Emerald Talisman is nothing like Twilight If you like vampire stories, then yes, you will like this book Julia Parker is not an average teenager She has the ability to read people s emotions After losing her mother and being raised by a father who is almost never there, she happens to be a well rounded, responsible girl She works, she has friends, she has a social life and when the going gets tough, so does Julia.Julia nearly falls to her death after walking through a park at night when her car breaks down, big mistake, she even admits When she is rescued by Nicholas, sure, she swoons Who wouldn t But even though he is in her thoughts and quickly in her heart, she doesn t obsess over him. When students start disappearing, Julia figures out the reasons why faster than anyone else, thanks to her empathic gift. This story was a little slow in starting, but that s okay You spend some time getting to know Julia, the kind of person she is You get to meet a well rounded cast of characters that know when to stay in the background and when they come back to the limelight, they don t overshadow the story I liked this book and couldn t wait to get to the next in the series They were absolutely quick reads and very enjoyable.

My General Rating 3.5 ____________________________________If sometime you literally asked yourself how would be the life of a possible vampire hunter who has no idea this beings exist and the help of one of them to train her, The Emerald Talisman main character could be a good example The Emerald Talisman narrates the story of Julia, a simple girl with a singular talent Julia s life goes out normally until one night when she is attacked by X creature and handsome Nicholas saves her life This is where our main character s eye opener to a world surrounded by supernatural forces and even her mother s disappearance will be one of the puzzle s pieces There s two aspects I ve really liked from the story One is that in the story, vampires are of a force than a constant Second, the singular characteristics that Pandos grants her vampires are interesting and could define it as a crossover between Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Twilight My favorite part is ENIGMA s appearance since it gives the story another supernatural touch and separates it from other story s comparisons The title has an important meaning and role in the story The end is satisfactory and leaves the possibility for Julia and Nicholas adventures The question would be Would we see story sidekicks I hope we do The Emerald Talisman is a new promising story for a new vampire saga.Random Note Even do there s a few misspells is not distracting at all.

Rating somewhere between 3 4 depending on my mood.Quickie review Ummm what to say I seem to be struggling with my reviews this week Emerald Talisman was a good start to a promising new series It has an interesting plot and premise I thought the action scenes were the most engaging part of the book The had a great pace and description I did have some struggles with this book it took me a while to get use to the writing style and connect with it I think for me it missed witty characters and I need that in a story With that all being said I will be definitely reading The Sapphire Talisman.

Rating 4.5The Emerald Talisman was an enchanting, stimulating, and eloquently written book Brenda introduced a promising vampire series that would interest fans of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries Julia, the female protagonist was quirky yet endearing Her ability to feel emotions from others curiously drew my attention The story opened up with Julia s car breaking down Now, instead of taking the safe walk to her home, she decides to naively take a short cut through the woods The suspense and fear through the woods was perfectly executed I felt every emotion Julia experienced There, she was pursued by a dark entity whose hunger was overwhelming Fortunately, for her sake, Nicholas, the infamous vampire slayer, showed up I really liked his personality and the aspect of him being half vampire and half human was refreshing The only part that annoyed me about Julia was how her feelings for Nicholas escalated quickly I didn t feel it was realistic and Nicholas was not yet swoon worthy for me to understand.Throughout the book, she was easily persuaded by prey and I wish she d use her intelligence to fluctuate her decisions But, Julia does show signs of strength, especially towards the end I have a feeling she will grow into a very important figure as the saga progresses Nicholas and his determination to keep her safe was admirable His voice of reason balanced her lack of better judgment Another part of the book I enjoyed was the mystery behind Julia s mother s disappearance As it slowly unraveled, I became involved and yearned to learn about the situation I look forward to the sequel, which I am sure will reveal the key to all my questions I am excited to see where Brenda will take Nicholas and Julia s relationship and also all the creatures of the night that will get thrown in their way

If you like Twilight, The Vampire Diaries, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer then you will like this book This is a fast pace, gripping, need to hurry and turn to the next page to find out what happened kind of book Brenda gave us a fresh, new, and exciting world about a vampire hunter and vampires.Julia can sense and feel emotions from people around her Her friends and family doesn t know she has this ability and wants to keep it that way Nicholas is a half vampire half human with super natural ability and a special talisman Oh And he hunts and kills vampires He has also been secretly guarding Julia since she was a little girl after her mother disappeared.Julia and Nicholas met when he saved her from a dangerous incident After that the story really picks up when they venture into a relationship Julia learns what really happens to her mother and gets into it thick with vampires. The ending will keep you sated but still wanting Overall, this book is exciting, fulfilling, and original I highly recommend this to everyone.

Reviewed Girls Without a Bookshelf.Saying this book tested my patience does not even begin to cover it it truly exhausted every ounce of whatever patience there was in me While I admit I was intrigued about its premise at first, and was thoroughly excited at having the book in my hands, eventually I had to get rid of it or risk insanity. For the record, I actually did not finish the book So whether or not you d take my review as accurate, I ll leave it for you to decide However, note that I did try to read as much of this book as I could possibly endure But it just was not possible to finish the book. The protagonist, Julia, narrates the story and this pretty much guaranteed it s downfall for me She s a whiny character, one that comes across as stupid than naive She s also rather weak in character and I was especially put off with her incessant pining after Nicholas. So the guy heroically saves her and she falls head over heels in love at first sight, granted But when Nicholas fails to show up after his saving her, she acts as if her life has suddenly lost its purpose She goes through the five stages of grief, as though she has lost a lover She begins blaming him, acting as if Nicholas owed her a lengthy explanation for promising to show up and somehow failing to do so sure, a promise is a promise but when a stranger promised something to you, do you honestly fall into a depression when it s broken Aren t you likely to be surprised if that stranger actually fulfilled a promised visit She also actually gets into the point where she tells herself to finally move on from Nicholas Move on As if they ever had a relationship in the first place It was just too pathetic.Of course a good mystery and even mysterious hero is always welcomed in my book but as I waited for the mystery to unravel, there was nothing else to sustain the plot other than Julia s never ending pining for Nicholas Not only did this lack of subplot resulted in the dragging of the storyline, it also made it boring, and Julia s narrative practically killed it for me Being annoyed to death by this character overshadowed my reading experience so much I can hardly comment on the book s writing and structure. So sadly, despite my initial enthusiasm, Emerald Talisman turned out to be rather unbearable
