Scholarly, I was looking for information on the qiyan of the Abbasid time period and though they weren t mentioned a number of training and custom information about courtesans were gone into and I found the information on the Italian era fascinating.

I got this book for background reading for my story It has a chapter about courtesans during the Ming dynasty of China It focuses particularly on their role as musicans and singers These courtesans were much entertainers than prostitutes I enjoyed the essay by Judith Zeitlin, who is one of my favourite Chinese historians, but I didn t bother reading the other essays in this collection as they mainly focused on women in Europe.
