The Harder They Fall (Hercs Mercs, #5) Chris Hardison Never Expected The Simple Consulting Gig To Put Him On Somebody S Hit List, But Hercules Security S Resident Computer Whiz Never Does Anything By Halves Now He S On The Run, Guarded By Gorgeous Jason Hekili, The Newest Member Of Herc S Crew But Chris And Jason Have A Past, And Holing Up In A Safe House Together Is As Complicated As It Is Dangerous Jason Still Wants Chris Even Though His Broken Heart Hasn T Healed He Isn T Sure He Can Trust Chris, But When A Crime Syndicate Targets Chris For Assassination, Jason Has To Put His Life On The Line To Protect Chris Or Risk Losing Their Second Chance For Happiness Before It Even Begins 4 Sweet Second Chance Stars I read the previous book in this series and enjoyed it I was looking forward to this one.For the most part, I enjoyed this second chance story The main character s had some issues to forgive in each other and that kind of annoyed me but then I put myself in their shoes and could relate. There was a sweet intensity between the character s and that is what kept my attention I was rooting for them It was short but still a packed a punch I would readby this author I was given a copy of this book for free by Inked Rainbow Reads in exchange for an honest review. I should have known betterThe only story I really liked a lot was book 3 in this series Again, this was bland and passionless I think the authors are trying to pack too much in short novellas, instead of developing the relationship they re trying to create as well The short action scenes were the best parts Chris and Jason s short dating history and sudden breakup did not support six months of supposed angst and heartbreak There was not much description of their time together and it was impossible to feel any connection I didn t dislike any of them, but they left so little impression, that I forgot and went ahead and bought this one. This one was a bit different to the others as it involved two of Herc s employees falling for each other in the midst of a threat when one discovered a whole load of criminal activity during routine IT work.I liked the contrast between the two guys but I also wanted to shake Chris for his insecurities and the way he treated Jason Jason himself was very much a sympathetic character and his fears about being hurt all over again were completely justifiable. The secondary plot proved a good one to hook the rest of the second chance romance on and it had a good bit of action ARC kindly provided by the authors in return for an honest and unbiased review. Book five in Ali McKay s Herc s Mercs series is taking a new approach much like the previous book In The Harder They Fall Chris is an IT geek who works for Alec in the branch office in LA He s not a bodyguard, or former military, he s just a cute geek who has been hurt in the past by dating outside his league, so to speak, so when he meets Jason he figures he can have some fun and leave it at thatJason was dangerous He was gorgeous, intelligent, and had that protective streak that drew Chris like a moth to a flame It would be far too easy for Chris to fall hard instead of keeping his heart safe like he needed to do Chris gets invited to Alec and Jon s anniversary party where he meets Jason, an actor, a model, a dancer, and an EMT They hit it off and begin dating, although Chris is determined to not get his heart involved since he s positive that Jason will grow tired of him and that ll be the end Unbeknownst to Chris, Jason is pretty sure he s found The One On the night they go out to celebrate Jason getting hired at Hercules Security, all of Chris s insecurities come out and he ends it with Jason, breaking both of their hearts.Six months later, Chris knows he made a huge mistake Actually he was convinced of it earlier than that, but he waffles between wanting to get Jason back and his insecurities convincing him it would still be the same issues I wanted to smack him A soul mate only comes along once in a lifetime and you don t throw it away Chris finally decides to fly to the East Coast and confront Jason, apologize, beg if he has to, in order to get him back Before these two can work out their possible relationship, however, Chris s house is blown up Luckily he s still in North Carolina at the Hercules corporate office, but now this means someone has targeted Chris for assassination, and Herc doesn t take too kindly to threats against his people Herc sends Chris with three bodyguards, one being Jason, to a remote safe house in upper New York state for as long as it takes to keep Chris alive to testify against the corporate fraud case he uncovered. This was another exciting addition to the series, but it was also a lotThe author spent a lot of time realistically portraying what these two men went through in trying to recapture their relationship It all boiled own to trust, but the author didn t take the easy way of an insta resolution Instead Chris and Jason had to work at it, all while trying to keep Chris alive I liked this book, a lot, and I hope the author plans onin this series.NOTE This book was provided by the publisher for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews
